Keeper league question

I’m in a 12 team 5×5 roto keeper league with a 10 player minors roster. I know Matt Moore is the top pitching prospect, perhaps even the top prospect this year. Trade wise though, do you think he’s worth Cory Luebke and Jameson Taillon? I know for this year it seems pretty much like a no brainer, but would Taillon’s potential to be the same kind of ace down the road give you pause?

Thanks.

Moore

I prefer Moore in that deal. We don’t know what Taillon will become, and while Luebke is good, Moore is pretty special. He’s a lefty Strasburg in my eyes.

Moore

Much thanks!

Trading Picks

I play in a 12 team 7×7 league with no keepers and own the 3rd overall pick. I have been toying with the idea of trading a draft pick package after that 1st pick. is it ever really worth it to trade picks and if so, what recommendations do you have for a guy in my situation?

I have never

traded picks and unless you think you can outdraft the other owners in your league, I wouldn’t do it.
What is your incentive to trade picks?

without their being any keepers involved, I wouldn’t trade a pick.

How will the Pineda/Campos for Montero/Noesi trade affect each of their future fantasy values?

fantasy values

I think Pineda and Montero would have had more value if they were not traded. Montero leaves a hitters park to a pitchers park, and Pineda goes to a hitters park from a pitchers park. Pineda also moves to the AL East, which is one of the better divisions in baseball.
I worry that Pineda may give up a few more HRs in Yankee stadium, which will impact his ERA, but he should win more games with that lineup behind him.
Montero will still be a good hitter, but may not hit for as much power in Safeco as he would have in Yankees stadium.

Friend

Are you a personal friend or acquaintance of John Sickels?

no

but I hope to meet him in the future. We trade emails from time to time, and I write a few articles for him here and there.

take the deal?

keeper league, 20 teams, 6×6
which side would you prefer:

lincecum/bard/trumbo
or
kennedy/youk/jim johnson (balt)

thnx

Lincecum side

he’s the best player in the deal, and I don’t think Kennedy repeats his 2011 season.

Felix Hernandez

Was last year a statistical aberration, or were his previous 2-ERA seasons the aberration?

Also, do you think that in light of the Montero trade, he will be the most valuable AL starting pitcher next year, now that he has a better shot at getting some run support?

Felix

I think he is one the most valuable pitchers before the trade and after the trade. Montero in the SEA lineup does not increase his value for me. He may add an extra win or two, but he is a top 5-6 starter in all of baseball.

Keeper

AL only keeper league. Trying to decide between Max Scherzer, Henderson Alvarez, or do I punt and both and keep Sergio Santos as a closer?

I like Alvarez potential, and am wondering is he is Scherzer’s equal this year and outperforms him next year?

keepers

I would keep Scherzer as he hasn’t reached his full potential and is still young.

Thanks Ray!

I appreciate it.

Keeper question

10 team league with 10 keepers each. We play a CI, an MI and a Util. I am currently pretty set on 7 keepers. Who should I pick as my final three: Salvador Perez, Jason Kipnis, Drew Stubbs, Rixky Romero, Drew Pomeranz or John Axford. I am leaning towards keeping Axford, Romero and Stubbs. What say you?

for me

I would keep Kipnis, Stubbs and Axford. Not sold on Romero. He benefitted from an extremely low .242 BABIP and 79% strand rate last year. His FIP was over 4, and he pitches in the AL East.

What do you think of Pomeranz?

Pomeranz

I would not keep him over the others. He doesn’t strike out enough hitters for me.

Montero as a C

Does the trade help or hurt his chances of keeping the C elig?

Montero

I actually think it might HELP his chances of catching after reading what Greg Johns wrote over at mlb.com:

At 6-foot-3, 225 pounds, he would figure to split time at catcher and designated hitter for the Mariners and provide a middle-of-the-order bat for an offense that finished last in the Majors in scoring the past two years.

If Johns is correct, Montero should gain catcher eligibility sometime in May of this season.

Diminished outlook

Have to figure that RBI &HR will suffer in Seattle. Does it diminish his stud outlook and would now be a sell high time?

no

I would keep him unless you were blown away with an offer. If he gains C eligibility, he will be very valuable, even in Safeco.

Posey

I have Jesus Montero (8 keepers). 16 teams
the owner of Posey wants to trade him for a pick.
How high of a pick should I offer? (all 13 of my picks are in the first 8 rounds, with 8 in rounds 3-5).

same league I was offered Kershaw for Fielder. I currently have Tim Lincecum, Matt Moore and Matt Latos.

current keepers are
Ryan Zimmerman
Matt Moore
Desmond Jennings
Shin Soo Choo
Prince Fielder
Tim Lincecum
Jesus Montero
Matt Latos

Posey

I like your 8 keepers more than Posey. Who would you drop if you made the deal for Posey? Choo?

As much as I like Kershaw, you already have 3 very good starters to build around. Keep Fielder.

sorry

this response was meant for bronzeagle.

I was thinking

trade a pick for posey, and trade montero for a pick.

Posey

Montero is a better hitter and way more power than Posey. He may never be the same…

Leonys Martin

Ray: Everything I’ve seen on Martin is that he is a speed/defense CF. Do you think he’ll mature into a CF that can produce considering his ballpark and the team around him in Texas, or be a speedster, light hitting-type? What is his ceiling or comps?

he may

here is what Keith Law wrote about him last July:

Martin’s an above-average runner, but not a burner, and shows easy range in center field with a plus arm. He did have one misadventure on a flyball hit over his head that became a double rather than an out. I’d imagine he’ll be worth five runs or more a year on defense when he gets more reps under his belt, which means it won’t take a lot of bat for him to be a solid-average regular. If he does hit, he’ll be a star, but there’s a lot of work left to do on his swing before that becomes a realistic possibility.

In the article, he mentioned that the Rangers were tweaking his swing, so the jury is still out on whether he can be a fantasy contributor or not.

Keep Philips?

I am in a $260 NL-only keeper auction league with 8 teams. We have unlimited keepers but must add $5 to their salary each season they are kept. My strong middle infield helped me to a title last season. I now can keep a high-cost-but-not-overpriced Tulo, a $10 Castro & a $5 Gordon … and also can keep a $34 Brandon Philips. $34 seems about $5 higher than what I would like to spend on him … however … at least six of the other teams have a serious need for middle infield help, so if I release Philips I will probably not get him back at that price. Is it a good idea to keep Philips, dominate the middle infield position, and have the depth to trade one of my shortstops post-auction to whatever team is starting nobodies in the middle infield if need be? Or is it better to release Philips, buy a bottom-tier 2B at auction (Omar Infante & Darwin Barney will be the top guys available other than him … possibly Hill & Espinosa could be non-keeper but they should be kept), and spend the excess $$ on pitching? Fyi, shopping Philips is an option I have already explored and no one is willing to give up anything of significant value pre-auction for a guy who is priced at or above perceived value. Sorry for the long question :-). Thanks for your advice!

no problem

I would not keep him at $34 in an NL-only keeper league. Your MI is solid, so I would spend the money on pitching or an outfielder. If you don’t have an ace starter, get one in the auction.
Plus, you are already spending plenty on Tulo, so no need to spend that much on Phillips.

Thanks

Thanks, Ray … appreciate it!
