Some hate it, some swear by it and I personally love it. I love the value of a great middle reliever. They add such great peripherals to your counting stats that they are often overlooked in leagues that don't count the Hold stat. So as we look to this year's top ranked hold candidates, keep this in mind. The first quality you are looking for is position in the bullpen. Second you're looking for previous success in the situations they were previously pitching in. Next you're looking for the quality of bullpen arms that surround these guys. Lastly you're looking for teams that have the ability to accumulate saves or save opportunities, as these stats are closely related because you need to be ahead late in the game to have both stats. Managerial tendencies also play a factor, but since the season hasn't started yet your going to have to take my word for this. So without further fanfare I will give you a tiered system for you to use on draft day. Enjoy

Joaquin Benoit says hi
He’s signed to a hefty deal on a team w/ an entrenched closer and he’s splitting 8th inning duties with Octavio Dotel. 29 and 25 holds the past two seasons is nothing to sneeze at and his K/9, whip, and era are all serviceable. low Tier 2 or Tier 3 material I would think….

Venters number one for me...
If we’re strictly talking about Holds potential.
It seems to me like the Braves are always in close contests and have the perfect combination of a good but not great pitching staff and good but not great offense. And, as you mentioned, Gonzalez has no qualms about going to Venters non-stop throughout the season.
But, if we’re talking about the potential to earn saves, then I might lean toward Adams as the Nathan situation could get ugly fast.

Venters
I agree with you a lot on Venters. I think the dearth of quality arms in ATL bullpen (Vizcaino and Medlen) will add to his numbers being a little down from last year. I mean Adams finished ahead of him value wise last year, but just barely.
I just have a love for Mike Adams as the games premier set up guy. Adams may sneak in saves here and there but barring injury to Nathan is going to be an everyday, granted they have the lead, kind of reliever.

Why is Jansen so low?
Is it because he’s expected to close very soon, because the Dodgers aren’t likely to get a lot of wins, or what? I don’t see how he’s not top 5 with those Ks.

Yea
I see him leaking into the closer’s role, but not initially. Figure he gets 15 holds to start the year and than maybe 10-15 saves.

Thanks
We use the holds stat in my league and this is very helpful.

Love the screen name.

Agreed.
The league I’m in does as well. Do you think Sean Marshall’s move to Cincinnati will have a drastic affect on his numbers/performance?

Very helpful list. These are hard to find
