It's Super Bowl Sunday weekend, so that means one thing. Fantasy baseball will be in full swing starting on Monday, and we will be providing more fantasy baseball coverage than ever this season. I will be posting a schedule of what you can expect on a daily basis from us once the season starts in the next week or two.
Until then, let us know if you have any fantasy baseball questions that you have heading into your 2012 fantasy drafts. Are you narrowing your keeper list down? Are you working on an offseason trade? Run them by us and we will do our best to answer them as quick as possible.

Second Baseman for the Future
Please rank these players over their careers at 2B:
Ackley , Kipnis, Rendon (assuming he ends up there), Jemile
Weeks
pooleboy - February 4, 2012
2B
Assuming Rendon plays 2b, i would rank them as follows:
Rendon
Kipnis
Ackley
Weeks
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
+1
agreed. I think people really over value Ackely. I took Kipnis in dynasty 3 rounds after Ackley went, which was a steal imo
Chris Buckley - February 4, 2012
+1
Agree. I’m not sure I would draft Rendon 1st right now though. He is 2-3 yr away from making an impact.
zeuspower - February 5, 2012
he'll take 2 years at the most
sportsfreak2744 - February 5, 2012
Keeper quality?
Are these all worthy keepers ($260 payroll 5×5 league) at their price? How do you see them progressing in the next 2-3 seasons? Is this the core of an elite group?
D Ackley – $6
B Lawrie – $7
M Trout – $5
D Jennings – $3
Melky Cabrera – $5
R Romero – $3
J Masterson – $5
J Valverde – $5
Any input is appreciated!
The Shape - February 4, 2012
I would
keep them all except Melky Cabrera. All are solid values with your core being Lawrie, Trout, and Jennings. I see these 3 becoming all stars in the next 3 seasons.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Strategy for new league
7 × 7 roto league – 16 teams – auction
Standard cats plus OBP & Tot Bases/QS & Hlds
Do you try to compete in all categories or punt a couple? I’m thinking of punting SB & SVs.
JKAISER - February 4, 2012
I would draft
power hitters and starters as starters have plenty of value in this type of league. Ace starters should be drafted early.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
I wouldn't punt any category
It would be very difficult to overcome a poor showing in SBs or SVs. So don’t do it. Never pay for SVs is true IMO because about half of opening day Closers lose their jobs because of injury or ineffectiveness. Also, the non-elite CLs tend to hurt by poor ERA/Whip and K/9. That means waiting to draft a CL at end of draft not so good. What I do is draft/auction a middle of the pack CL or 2 and then watch box scores/rumor mills to grab the new CL. A half dozen elite CLs wait in the wings plus another decent half dozen future CLs. Picking up just 2 of them by mid-May should allow you to be competitive in SVs. As HLDs are a stat in your league, perhaps you can draft such future CLs. If you punt a stat, punt HLDs by rotating non-CL RPs with hitters for Monday and Thurs offdays for your guys. Then pick up a replacement RP the next day (assuming daily roster changes allowed). As for SBs, I believe you have to draft the elite runners to be in top 3 in that stat, but you can be in top half by drafting guys like Bonifacio and others who have a high ADP. Look for players on running teams as the manager (Marlins’ Guillen as example) make a big effect on SBs.
Bama Len - February 5, 2012
Most (but not all) Closers don't hurt your rate stats
A Behemoth - February 6, 2012
NL only keepers
5 × 5 , $300 salary cap for 15 hitters and 10 pitchers; 11 keepers max. I’m undecided about a couple of roster spots:
2 of 5: Bourgeois $5, Helton $2, Blanks $3, C.B. Young $24, Reyes $40
2 of 3: Collmenter $1, Stauffer $4, Vogelsong $6
I have decent balance on the rest of the keeper roster; probably more speed than power.
TIA
cookierojas16 - February 4, 2012
can you deal some speed
for power?
I would need to know the salaries of your other keeps before deciding if I would want to keep Reyes at $40.
I like Helton at $2 and Young at $24. Not crazy about your pitchers, but if I had to keep 2 I would keep Collmenter and Stauffer.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Please give us your reasonable projection for Mike Stanton
Robert L. Bishop - February 4, 2012
Stanton
I think he can hit .270-.275 with 40 HRs and 110 RBI, with the potential to hit 45 HRs. And he might steal double digit bags too.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
So you totally disagree with all the numbers that suggest that's a long shot?
dudedudedude - February 4, 2012
assumptions
assume no growth in fly balls, HR/FB, drop in K rate…….so yes, I disagree with the analysis.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
I did not assume he would not get better
In fact, I gave him tons of credit, giving him Barry Bonds like HR/FB Rate and he still doesn’t hit 40 home runs. I proved his speed was mediocre and there’s tons of evidence on K-rate vs. age. You would have to assume exponential increases in talent level for him to be that good. I think you need to re-read the article.
dudedudedude - February 4, 2012
take a look at what
Bautista did in his early years vs now….I think you are underselling him at a very young age.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
So now you're comparing him to someone who totally overhauled his swing?
That doesn’t make any sense. Did Stanton change his swing to start hitting more fly balls?
dudedudedude - February 4, 2012
he can't?
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Can we not say that about any player though?
Why doesn’t Hanley change his swing to hit more fly balls? “What if” gets you no where.
dudedudedude - February 4, 2012
Not to mention more fly balls will hurt his average
dudedudedude - February 4, 2012
+1
Agree w ray. Those numbers look accurate as what we’ve can/should do.
zeuspower - February 5, 2012
AL only keepers
5 × 5 $260
Are these players worth keeping?
Michael Young $24
Ben Revere $6
fantasyfreak - February 4, 2012
Yes
I would keep them both at those prices.
How many can you keep? who are you keeping?
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
I was unsure of Young at $24
Because of his Multi position. I’d thought he might be a good keeper.
We can keep $130.
Other keepers include
Avila $6
Gordon $13
A.Cabrera $15
Morrorw $18
Span $7
Nova $7
Francouer $6
Walden $6
Valverde $24
fantasyfreak - February 4, 2012
Morrow
I would definitely throw him back at $18. He should come cheaper in the draft.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Morrow
I’m a Jays fan ;) and hoping he’ll have a breakout year…….
I know I shouldn’t but…..
fantasyfreak - February 4, 2012
I would not
and if you really like him, you can get him cheaper in the draft. The worst that can happen is you pay $18 again, which i doubt.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
OK
Appreciate your feedback!!!
Love your site!! Keep up the good work!!
fantasyfreak - February 4, 2012
thanks
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Can you please rank Derek Holland, Jordan Zimmermann, Brandon Beachy?
John Black - February 4, 2012 via mobile
tough
I would go Zimmermann, Holland and Beachy.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
trade advice
in a dynasty keeper league, would you trade rasmus and moustakas for prince fielder. i’m looking long term
callmezeke - February 4, 2012
Fielder
I would take the Fielder side in that deal
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
I was offered Stephen Drew for my Zack Cozart
Should I take it? 5X5 Roto Keeper League.
John Black - February 4, 2012 via mobile
right now
I would keep Cozart, as we don’t know if Drew will be healthy on Opening Day.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Lucas Duda seems like a popular "sleeper" pick on many sites
However, I think he might become overvalued and drafted too early. He had a great 2nd half I think he can post 25+ homers with a solid batting avg. Kid has massive power as his avg distance for homers was 2nd only to Mike Stanton.
Will Lucas Duda get everyday at bats though? He is brutal defensively.
John Black - February 4, 2012 via mobile
yes
from Mets.com:
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Rebuilding team with an offer...
Trade offer just came in (reminder 5×5 $260 mixed league)…
Bryce Harper $1
Austin Jackson $6
for
CC $44
Melky Cabrera $5
This would put me in the draft $224 in cap room and the following base:
D Ackley – $6
B Lawrie – $7
M Trout – $5
D Jennings – $3
B Harper – $1
A Jackson – $6
R Romero – $3
J Masterson – $5
J Valverde – $5
Verlander and Kershaw will be available in the draft to replace CC and I have money to spare… what do you think of this deal? When does Harper become an impact player and is he worth this price?
The Shape - February 4, 2012
ACCEPT!!!!!!!!
now.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Harper
is a steal at $1…..he will be an impact player by 2013-2014.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Agree
How long can you keep Harper?
zeuspower - February 5, 2012
Thanks!
I appreciate the feedback. I pulled the trigger last night. I have him for $1 for the first two years of his contract (this will be his second year). I can then extend him going into the third season (next year) for $5 per year of extension. I was thinking a 2 year extension which would make him an $11 player through the 2015 season. Thoughts?
The Shape - February 5, 2012
Max Scherzer or Josh Beckett?
They kind of had opposite years of what I expected for them in 2011. Who do you like most in 2012?
John Black - February 4, 2012 via mobile
Beckett
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Keeper Question
I can keep 6. Two have to meet rookie qualifications as set by our league. I’ll denote these with *.
Prince Fielder
Justin Upton
Carlos Gonzalez
Tommy Hanson
Asdrubal Cabrera
Yovani Gallardo
Ian Kennedy
Brandon Beachy*
Brett Lawrie*
Matt Moore*
Bryce Harper*
15-team 5×5...I won last year with Harper on my bench throughout, so I am tempted to do it again. Who else should I keep? I may end up keeping 3 rookies…
AstroZee - February 4, 2012
wow
you need to deal one of Moore or Lawrie if you can’t keep all 3.
I would keep Fielder, Upton, Cargo and Cabrera or Gallardo.
if you can keep all 3 of Moore, Lawrie and Harper, I would keep them + Fielder, Cargo and Upton.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Indeed
I can keep as many rookies as I want. Just 2 minimum. I was leaning toward the same. Thanks
AstroZee - February 4, 2012
bogaerts
is he the heir apparent at short? When does he come up?
callmezeke - February 4, 2012
3B
many prospect experts project him to move to 3b eventually, but I am sure the Red Sox will keep him at SS as long as possible.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
sano
can he stay at third or will he move to left or first
callmezeke - February 4, 2012
Sano
He is already a big guy, so I assume an outfield or first base spot is in his future.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
eric thames
is he worth taking a chance on or does snider have the inside track
callmezeke - February 4, 2012
Thames
I think Thames has the inside track right now.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 4, 2012
Who to keep? Who to keep?
Howdy Ray.
Which of these bats has the best career: Josh Sale, Cesar Puello, or Ryan Kalish?
Which of these hurlers has the best career: Matt Purke, Randall Delgado, or Brent Cecil?
Much thanks!
Fanthead - February 4, 2012
not easy
as Sale did not perform well in rookie ball and Puello, while he has plenty of tools, needs to work on the plate discipline.
Kalish is closer for sure….but I might take a chance on Puello based on his tools.
I would keep Delgado out of the 3 starters
Ray Guilfoyle - February 5, 2012
prospects in MWL
i live close to beloit. i think sano will be playing there. who else do you know of that will be in the midwest league?
callmezeke - February 4, 2012
I'm thinking of finding a league and just draft first- and second-year players.
Just to see what would happen. Who would be your top ten?
extavernmouse - February 5, 2012
this would require more than
a quick answer here…..maybe it is a topic for a strategy article. Will work on this for later this week.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 5, 2012
Thanks, Ray
I’ll look forward to it!
extavernmouse - February 5, 2012
How long of a contract would you put these players on:
Mike Adams 4m(Holds, SVs, ERA, K’s, WHIP)
Wilson Ramos 4.25m
Brett Cecil 4m
I have one 5 year, two 3 years, and three 1 year deals.
It is a 170m league. THANKS!
thedub - February 5, 2012
Ramos
would be the guy I would give the long term contract to out of those 3.
Adams is older and relief pitchers can be volatile, so I would not give him a long term deal.
Ramos-5 yr
Adams-1 yr
Cecil-1 yr
Ray Guilfoyle - February 5, 2012
What are your thoughts on Ben Revere for the next 3-5 years?
You think he can steal 40-50 a year over that time span? I was proposed a deal for him and I am not sure if I am paying for a one-trick pony or not. (A. Jones-1 yr only for Revere-3 yrs)
Thanks!
Big Wolt - February 5, 2012
Revere
I can see that. The Twins will struggle to score runs, so Revere should see plenty of green lights, if he can get on base.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 5, 2012
Help bring home the trophy...
18-team, keeper (we keep 22 of 25), and have 15-member farm team. Came in second last year and want to know what I can do take this team to the championship. Also, considering cutting guys with asterix for upcoming milb draft in our league. Anything you can see that I need to change, trade, draft…?

Joe Pytleski - February 5, 2012
if you are going for it
why not try to deal Arenado in a package for a stud power hitter?
Ray Guilfoyle - February 5, 2012
Who do I keep?
I can keep 8 from list below:
Alex Gordon, Josh Hamilton. Mauer, Konerko, Lawrie, M Morse, Pedroia, HanRam, aramis Ramirez, Utley, David Wright, Axford, Gio Gonzalez, Morrow, Sabathia, and Verlander. I won league last year. It is 20 team, 21 stats, elimination league that ends up with 8 teams. There are 2 Cs, 2 INF (no CI or MI), 1 Util, only 2 SP and 4 P slots. 162 games and 2000 innings limit (means streaming SPs especially in 2nd half works well). Thanks.
Bama Len - February 5, 2012
keeps
Gordon
Hamilton
Lawrie
Pedrioa
HanRam
Wright
Verlander
Sabathia
tough to drop some of these guys, but those are the 8 I would keep.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 5, 2012
Ellsbury in H2H
My 10 team H2H 6X6 (OPS and holds) just dropped to 8 teams. My keepers are:
Carlos Santana
Joey Votto
Robinson Cano
Evan Longoria
Hanley Ramirez
Matt Holliday
Justin Upton
Mike Stanton
CC Sabathia
Zack Greinke
I’m thinking that Ellsbury will be around by my 1st pick (I have the 5th and 7th picks of the 1st round, no 2nd round picks). I wasn’t planning on going after steals since it’s just one category, but Ellsbury is enticing. Should I go with him or would I be better off with a Haren, Pineda, Shields, Wilson, Hanson, Bumgarner etc. tier pitcher?
schuth - February 5, 2012
Ellsbury
can you get him and one of the pitchers? I would try to do get both.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 5, 2012
Pitching
I have Chris Carpenter & Matt Garza at equal price in an NL-only league. I am looking to trade one. Who should I keep & who should I shop?
Wilbury - February 5, 2012
Carp
He pitched a lot of innings last year, including the playoffs, but there is a chance Garza is traded, and it could be to the AL, so I would keep Carp.
Ray Guilfoyle - February 5, 2012

Wilbury - February 5, 2012
Keeper deal?
16 team h2h keeper, should I deal S. Castro (8th) Putz (23rd)and some other fodder I wasnt keeping for Hosmer in the 25th can only keep for this yr and next. HAte to give up Castro with A. CAbrera and Reyes already kept and Tulo likely the #1 pick, then again, Pujols, Miggy and Prince will be kept
